Nausicaä: Inside the First Methanol Fuel-Cell Superyacht

There are roughly 5,000 superyachts in active service worldwide. Of those, exactly one is powered by a methanol fuel cell. Her name is Nausicaä, she was built for the Japanese entrepreneur Yusaku Maezawa, and she is the most technically ambitious vessel to leave Lürssen’s sheds in a decade.

Until December 2025, the yacht was known by her project code, Cosmos. The name change — to a figure from both Homer’s Odyssey and Hayao Miyazaki’s Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind — feels appropriate for a vessel that occupies an unusual position: half production yacht, half engineering prototype, entirely a statement about where large-yacht propulsion is heading.

The propulsion question

Methanol fuel cells are not new. The technology has been used in commercial maritime applications for over a decade, primarily on cargo vessels and ferries where the case for emission reduction is straightforward. What Lürssen has done with Nausicaä is install the technology, for the first time, on a 114-metre private yacht — with all the additional design, redundancy, and safety challenges that scale introduces.

The system: two 500-kilowatt methanol fuel cells, supplied by methanol that is converted onboard into hydrogen via a reformer module. The hydrogen then runs through proton-exchange membrane fuel cells that generate electricity silently, with water as the only byproduct. The fuel cells are built from stacks of bipolar plates and membrane electrode assemblies, integrated with a maritime-compliant methanol supply and ventilation system.

The result is that Nausicaä can cruise at up to 7 knots for approximately 1,000 nautical miles on fuel cells alone, or remain at anchor for up to 15 days with zero emissions and effectively no noise. For higher speeds and longer crossings she retains conventional diesel engines, generators, and tanks — the fuel-cell installation is additive, not a replacement.

This matters more than the operating profile suggests. The 15-day silent anchor mode is what Nausicaä’s owner will use most. The ability to stay in a pristine Mediterranean anchorage, with the lights and air conditioning running, without generator noise carrying across the water or diesel residue in the bay — that is a different category of experience from any conventional superyacht.

The Marc Newson design

The propulsion is the headline; the design is the conversation. Marc Newson, the Australian industrial designer known for his work with Apple, Louis Vuitton, Qantas, and the 139.7-metre Solaris, was given an extraordinary brief: design a 114-metre yacht as a continuous sculptural object, without traditional cruise-yacht tiered superstructure or conventional silhouette.

What he produced is one of the most visually distinctive yachts in modern construction. The exterior is dominated by an explorer-leaning profile, large uninterrupted glass surfaces, and an Ice Class 1D rating for higher-latitude navigation. The most recognisable feature is a glass-domed owner’s study positioned high on the superstructure, connected to a private sky terrace. Lürssen developed a bespoke process to bend thick glass with optical precision, producing a clear, continuous 360-degree panorama.

The glazing continues down the cabin deck — a full band of glass running the length of the level — and forward into a bow observation lounge beneath the helipad. The aft deck features a swimming pool and Jacuzzi flanked by sun loungers, with a dry-dock system beneath for launching and retrieving the yacht’s largest tender. The aft section also has a class-approved cut-out that may serve as a beach club or house additional water craft.

Inside, Newson’s signature smooth surfaces and biomorphic forms run throughout. The Aquariva by Marc Newson — the speedboat he designed in 2010 — is widely regarded as the most successful modern integration of industrial design into yacht-building, and Nausicaä is the much larger continuation of that approach.

The owner

Yusaku Maezawa is one of the more publicly visible figures in the UHNW yacht market. The founder of Japanese online retailer Zozo, art collector, and the first private citizen booked on a SpaceX lunar flyby mission, Maezawa announced in 2022 that he had commissioned a new Lürssen and had appointed Marc Newson to lead the design. Lürssen has not formally confirmed ownership, but the timeline, design team, and scope of the project align too precisely for the connection to be coincidental.

Maezawa’s relationship with Newson predates the yacht — Newson designed elements of the SpaceX-related dearMoon mission, and the two have collaborated across multiple projects. The choice of methanol fuel cells fits Maezawa’s broader public positioning around environmental and technological innovation.

What Nausicaä signals

Lürssen has been working on fuel-cell research since 2009 and methanol-hydrogen integration since 2012, often in partnership with Freudenberg and classification bodies including RINA and DNV. Nausicaä is the proof-of-concept yacht for that fifteen-year research programme.

The wider implication, for the industry, is that the next generation of 100-metre-plus yachts will increasingly carry alternative propulsion. Project Zero, the 226-foot Vitters sailing yacht, uses solar and wind only. The 100-metre Hull 597 from the Italian Sea Group uses diesel-electric architecture. The Orient Express Corinthian — though a commercial sailing vessel rather than a private yacht — runs SolidSail propulsion. The owner who, in 2018, would have specified a conventional diesel installation will, in 2026, be presented with three or four credible alternatives.

Nausicaä is the most technically ambitious of these. She is currently in final outfitting and is expected to be delivered in 2026, with first deployments likely in the Mediterranean.

The yacht does what one-off ships occasionally do: she shifts the centre of gravity of what is considered possible at the top of the market. The next 114-metre Lürssen — and the one after that — will be measured against her.
