On 20 July 1969, as Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin descended to the lunar surface aboard the Eagle, one instrument on their wrists had already endured perhaps the most rigorous testing programme ever imposed on a consumer timepiece. The Omega Speedmaster Professional had survived temperature extremes of -18°C to +93°C, humidity exposure, magnetic fields, shocks, vibrations, and pressure decompression — 11 separate NASA qualification tests across eleven days in 1965, which eliminated every competitor including Rolex and Breitling. Only the Speedmaster passed. It became the first watch worn on the Moon, and nothing in watchmaking history has quite matched the poetry of that moment: a mechanical chronograph, born as a racing watch, pressed into the service of humanity’s greatest adventure.
From Racing to the Stars: An Origin Rarely Told
The Speedmaster did not begin with astronauts. When Omega introduced it in 1957 — the same year they launched the Seamaster 300 and the Railmaster, a triumvirate of professional tool watches — the Speedmaster was designed for motorsport. Its name derived from the tachymeter scale on its bezel, allowing drivers to calculate speed over a measured distance. The original reference CK 2915, powered by the remarkable Calibre 321 movement, established the hallmarks that would persist for seven decades: the triple-register chronograph layout, the high-contrast dial, the domed hesalite crystal.
What elevated it to legend was circumstance meeting excellence. In 1962, astronaut Wally Schirra wore a personal CK 2998 on the Mercury-Atlas 8 mission — the first Omega in space. By 1965, NASA had formally selected the Speedmaster Professional for all crewed missions. Ed White wore one during America’s first spacewalk in June of that year. And on the Apollo 11 mission, it was Buzz Aldrin’s reference 105.012 that became the first watch to touch the lunar surface — Armstrong’s had been left in the command module as a backup timer. Aldrin’s Moonwatch subsequently disappeared in transit to the Smithsonian in 1970 and has never been recovered, which has if anything only deepened the mythology.
The Movement That Made History
The Calibre 321 that powered the Moon-landing watches is a movement of extraordinary character — a column-wheel chronograph of exceptional refinement, originally developed by Lemania and prized by collectors for its silky action and lateral clutch mechanism. Omega replaced it in 1968–69 with the Calibre 861 (and its successor, the 1861), which powered the Moonwatch for the following five decades. In 2019, marking the 50th anniversary of the lunar landing, Omega returned to first principles with the Calibre 3861 — a Master Chronometer-rated movement incorporating the co-axial escapement originally developed by British watchmaker George Daniels, offering superior resistance to magnetism and extended service intervals. It is this movement that powers the current Moonwatch Professional.
In January 2026, Omega opened the year with two striking new Speedmaster Moonwatch references: a “reverse panda” dial configuration — black dial with white chronograph subdials — offered in both steel and the brand’s proprietary 18K Moonshine Gold. The black ceramic bezel ring carries the tachymeter scale in white enamel, a combination that bridges modern durability with classic Speedmaster aesthetics. It is the first time Omega has offered this inverted dial configuration as a general release, demonstrating the brand’s commitment to finding fresh expressions of the Moonwatch identity without compromising its essential character.
The Snoopy Award and the Spirit of Excellence
No account of the Speedmaster is complete without acknowledging the NASA Silver Snoopy Award — the space agency’s highest accolade for safety and mission success, presented to Omega in 1970 in recognition of the Speedmaster’s role in the survival of the Apollo 13 crew. When an oxygen tank explosion crippled the service module two days into the mission, the crew used the Speedmaster as a backup timer to execute the critical 14.2-second engine burn that corrected their trajectory and brought them home. The watch did not merely accompany space exploration. On at least one occasion, it helped save lives.
Why the Speedmaster Endures
In a watch market where fashion and speculation frequently drive acquisition decisions, the Speedmaster occupies genuinely rare territory: it is simultaneously one of watchmaking’s most historically significant timepieces and one of its most accessible. The Moonwatch Professional remains the most approachable entry point into serious Swiss horology — offering a legitimate connection to one of humanity’s greatest achievements, a hand-wound movement of genuine character, and a design that has needed no fundamental revision since 1969 because the original was correct.
